OFFGRID NOW®

2024 - Present

In July of 2024, I was engaged to work as a Marketing Consultant for OFFGRID NOW®, a renewable energy start-up based in Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast, QLD.

The company had developed a newly designed off grid solar power station and was seeking to gain traction in the marketplace with the design and creation of a new website, and the development of a social media strategy focused on engaging with prospective customers, strengthening the brand and boosting brand awareness.

To deepen my understanding of the customer experience and design a winning marketing strategy, I attended public sales events, interviewing internal and external technical staff, and current and prospective customers. I identified 3 key areas that required focus:

  1. The industry had been catering to a niche of technically savvy customers and was predominantly too “tech-heavy” in their communications for a general customer base.

  2. The marketplace was going to grow from a highly niched product, to a mainstream product within the next 5-10 years.

  3. The company had a high quality product offering with 5 key products, however there was a lack of uniformity in the product names, and the sales materials were too technical.

As a result of this research I developed the Marketing Strategy: “Off Grid Solar Systems Made Simple: Like Ordering A Coffee”. I doubled down on the coffee theme as I wanted to take the complexity of the off grid power world, and meld it with something simple and relatable to the mainstream. We aligned the 5 products names clearly on a coffee theme with the Piccolo, Excelso, Daily Grind, Robusta and Forza off grid solar power cabinets. Leveraging the deep knowledge of the technical team at OFFGRID NOW®, I developed a 10 minute, web-based “Off Grid Assessment” form that streamlined the process of selecting the right off grid solar system for a customer, which has been extremely effective, simplifying an otherwise arduous process of calculating energy consumption.

In 2025, with the announcement of a Federal Government Battery Rebate, the company extended a deepening of the role into Business Development, and I was embedded with the OFFGRID NOW® team at their offices in Coolum Beach Industrial Park. I was tasked with the development of the companies sales and marketing processes, including the design and implementation of a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, integration of existing paper and spreadsheet based processes into a synchronised, cloud-based and automated data hub and the development of internal sales processes in preparation for hiring a sales team. I also instigated the installation of a media studio for the production of high quality product imagery, and the creation of a media space for future marketing activities.

At present, I am designing, implementing and managing the internal and external sales processes at OFFGRID NOW®, and developing an AI-chatbot for Technical Support and Sales.

DRV CONVEYORS

2021 - 2022

In March of 2022, I was engaged as a Business Development Specialist for DRV Conveyors, a coal mining services company based in Heatherbrae in the Newcastle Region of NSW. The company specialises in conveyor belt services, repairs and refurbishment for the underground coal mining industry in the Hunter Valley Region of NSW.

The company had novel plans to create an inventory software platform for the management of conveyor belt assets used in underground coal mines called the “DRVC Customer Portal”. The software would be an integral component of an industry leading approach to compliance and integrity in the undertaking of conveyor belt services for underground coal mines. The company was poised for growth, and planned to utilise the service to drive the acquisition of future business opportunities.

The project was divided into three phases:

  1. Digitisation - The internal processes of the company were well established, but paper-based. I initially focused on the digitisation of the paper-based processes, incorporating a low-code database building software called Caspio to develop a relational database. The Caspio platform enabled form submissions to store the data in a cloud-based, searchable database. The digitisation of these procedures streamlined day-to-day business processes, replacing clipboards and paper with iPads.

  2. Optimisation - Once the foundational work procedures had been digitised, the focus was turned towards process design and optimisation. The task required a complex relational database that tracked conveyor belt inspections for different types and sizes of conveyor belt. The system also accounted for the grading and traceability (down to the metre) of individual sections of conveyor belt that were removed from one conveyor belt roll and added to another during the refurbishment process. The system was also tracking QA procedures for each length of conveyor belt, and each join where one section had to be joined to another.

  3. Roll Out - Once the system was optimised, the “DRVC Customer Portal” was rolled out to a major underground coal mine operation in the Hunter Valley. Through the development of User Permissions, an authorised employee of the mine site could locate and track every conveyor belt roll in their inventory, and every section of a refurbished belt could be tracked and QA processes monitored.

As of November 2024, the company has completed over 1000 km of conveyor inspection and refurbishment and the system that I designed has been integral to the growth of the company, and to the companies commitment to compliance and transparency.
